Ever been passed over for a promotion or not selected for your dream job? It’s happened to me and yes, I was very upset. I had a few terse words for God as to why he had let me down. God knew this job was perfect for me. I had done all the right things, prayed about it and thanked Him in advance, trusting that He would deliver me the job on a platter. I even reminded God of His promise in John 15:7 , ‘If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.’ So what went wrong?
God did answer the prayer, but not in the way I expected. God does want the best for us, even when His answer doesn’t appear to be the best. God challenges us to trust in Him in so many ways. He wants us to have that steadfast, unshakeable faith, that He hears our prayers and will answer them according to His good and perfect will. He loves us more than anyone on earth. So as any parent, He is going to protect us and guide us along the path that will provide us with His best ….if we let Him.
When we apply for a job, we presume we know everything we need to know about the job. However, God knows the facts. He knows the ‘real deal’ and what the job really entails. He knows who will have authority over the position and all the players impacting the success of that position. God knows the current and future demands that will be placed on that position. More importantly, He knows what the future holds for you. There may be personal demands, illnesses or a family emergency in your future that could interfere with your ability to perform the job. So the next time you’re passed over, thank God. At some point, you may discover the reason why. Regardless, you need to trust that it was the best decision for you.
In my case, the company that advertised my ‘perfect job’ experienced financial difficulties. The people who had my perfect job were soon displaced and made available to the job market. I remained at my employer for another 15 years, receiving three additional promotions.
So was I glad I got passed over??? You bet!!
